With the expansion of data centers across the country, there is a growing need for data center technicians for new and redesigned buildings. Even if you’re not currently working as a technician, there are opportunities for suitable candidates to learn and grow in this field.
What is a Data Center Technician?
The technician manages cable infrastructure installation and maintenance at a data center. Data centers are buildings that provide power to run applications and store data that runs businesses across the country. When users store information in the cloud, they’re using an off-site data center. Each building needs to be properly wired with specific types of cable.
If you have experience in landscaping, electrical, welding, HVAC, skilled or construction backgrounds, or are a Veteran transitioning to a civilian job, becoming a data center technician could be a good career move for you. At Fieldlink, we’re looking for people with a strong work ethic as well as technical and mechanical aptitude.
What is entailed in the work?
We’re currently placing contract-to-hire as well as full-time candidates. Even if you don’t have hands-on experience, we may be able to connect you with training and certifications to get you started in your new career. On a day-to-day basis, data center technicians handle:
- Cable infrastructure and fiber rough-in
- Dressing and labeling cables
- Cable and fiber termination
- Rack and Stack equipment
- Server rack buildouts and elevation
- Installation of infrastructures like cables, fiber tray systems, ladder racks, and power trays
- Receiving of material hardware and assemblies
- Reading and following blueprints
- Installation of structured wiring, including network drops, coax cable drops, and specialty cable
- Running fiber from the outside to inside the data center
As a data technician, you will be required to follow safety guidelines like wearing proper PPE and cleaning up the job site and abiding by OSHA guidelines.
What PPE is required?
The PPE requirement may vary from job to job, but overall, data technicians will need a hard hat, composite toe work boots, gloves, protective eyewear, and a safety vest. Any or all of these are required by our client and/or OSHA.

Your job as a data center technician is an important part of the systems running efficiently. Cable management done well means decreased time to troubleshoot a problem, more uptime, and greater capacity utilization at the data center. Following the plan may be time-consuming on the front end but will save maintenance costs and improve the lifespan of equipment in the future.
The career path could lead you to manage your own crew of data technicians, to work as an employee of the company, or to an administrative role where you can teach and mentor other technicians on how to perform best.
At Fieldlink, we seek candidates for data technician roles and other low-voltage wiring positions for our clients. Many positions require a high school diploma or GED and work experience. As we stated earlier, experience does not have to be directly in this field.
